HYGIENIC METHODS OF FAMILY LIMITATION (Part two) Dutch methods of birth control. The Neo-Malthusian League of Holland, knows nothing of this pamphlet and is not in any way responsible for its publication. (Part Three) Magnetation methods of birth control. [n.p., but the American Birth Control League, n.d. but post
1914 and ca. 1921.]. 8vo, pp. 34; with three small diagrams; some light foxing but otherwise clean and bright; stapled as issued in the original green wrappers; a good copy. A small and discreet ‘confidential’ pamplet providing advice on birth control, for both women and men, and issued by the American Birth Control League, which was founded in 1921 by Margaret Sanger. The pamphlet draws upon two of her works, her highly successful ‘Family Limitations’ (1914) and ‘Magnetation methods of birth control’ (ca. 1915) which argued that refraining from ejaculation could lead to greater health, satisfaction, and deeper connections between partners. The brief preface makes clear that the pamphlet only contains advice on birth control, and not abortion.
From 1873-1957, Comstock Laws restricted the distribution of printed material with sexual content ranging from reproductive healthcare to pornography. Family Limitations was published in defiance of Comstock, and led to her flee to England to escape probable prosecution.
Bibliography: OCLC locates a similar title though shorter pamphlet and a London printing by the Malthusian League located at the Library of Congress, the International Institute of Social History and Oxford.
